What’s New: Nurse Practitioner Blog
Welcome to Connie’s blog….
What is the difference between influenza "The FLU" and gastroenteritis ?
The best way to protect yourself and others from the “flu” is vaccination.
What is Influenza? What is the “Stomach Flu”?
Influenza is NOT gastroenteritis (mistakenly referred to as the "stomach flu").
Influenza is a respiratory illness which can lead to pneumonia and death. Immunization can prevent complications particularly in those who smoke or have asthma or other lung diseases; elderly and children, and those with other chronic illnesses. Immunization helps with herd immunity which protects our most vulnerable. The Flu Shot does not give you influenza!
Gastroenteritis is a viral infection of the stomach and bowels. There is no vaccine only prevention through hand washing and staying home when ill. Viral shedding can last up to 1-2 weeks after illness in stool.
Check out the CDC website for evidenced based information.
