Prior to your surgery you will be given specific instructions that are pertinent to your specific procedure.  You may be required to attend a pre-op clinic, and it is important that you follow the requirements outlined by your specific care team.

Here are some general requirements for anyone attending our surgical services in a non-emergent capacity.  If the instructions outlined here are not in alignment with instructions provided by your care team, always follow your personalized instructions.

Prior to your surgery please:

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery, unless otherwise advised.
  • Do not drink any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before you are admitted for day surgery. Do not use any recreational drugs for 48 hours before your surgery.
  • Follow the specific instructions given to you at your pre-op appointment regarding medications and when to stop eating and drinking.
  • If you have any questions, please call Surgical Services/ the Day Surgery Clinic at (705) 746- 4540 ext. 3412.
  • Arrange transportation and your support person in advance. You are required to have a responsible adult drive you home, as the effects of sedation last past your discharge. You will also require a support person to remain with you overnight following your surgery.
  • Ensure that patients under the age of 16 are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Have a bath or shower prior to surgery. Remove all make-up, nail polish (fingers and toes), and artificial nails. Do not wear perfume or aftershave.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes and flat-soled, close-toed shoes.
  • Remove all body jewelry and leave all valuables at home (e.g. money, jewelry, credit cards). The health centre is not responsible for any loss of personal items.
  • Bring your glasses, contacts or hearing aids, along with their storage containers) should you require them.  Please do not wear contacts during your procedure.
  • Bring your health card (OHIP).
  • If you use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, ensure that you bring your CPAP machine with you and be aware that you may be requested to stay longer (2 hours) to ensure you are fully awake.

If for any reason you cannot keep your appointment call your Surgeon’s office. If you must cancel during non-business hours, please notify the hospital at (705) 746-9321 and ask to speak to the Clinical Care Coordinator.

Discharge usually occurs 1-2 hours after surgery. If your Surgeon or Anesthetist considers it in your best interest, you may be admitted to the hospital.  If your support person will not be attending the clinic with you, they will be required to provide a contact number to Day Surgery Clinic and will be informed of when to pick you up.

Your post-op instructions will vary depending on your surgical procedure.  You will be provided details upon your discharge.  Our team encourages that your support person be present and engaged in this conversation.  If you have any questions that arise after you are discharged, please call the contact you are provided upon admission or (705) 746- 4540 ext. 3412.

Different procedures require differing levels of post-op care.  Please be sure to follow your specific instructions on post-op care carefully.

If you experience any issues or have any concerns, please call your Surgeon’s office directly.

In case of an Emergency or arising, urgent issue do not hesitate to call 911 or go to your nearest Emergency Department.
